The wait is over
After the launch of many touchscreen devices by every possible handset manufacturer, it was about time Nokia came out with one of its own. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is not an iPhone killer but is a promising start to Nokia’s journey into the touchscreen segment.

Unlike most touchscreen devices, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a stocky and long phone (the trademark retro look that Nokia continues to stick to). Despite this it is comfortable to hold and can be put in the pocket. Moreover, it can also be used with one hand.

The 3.2-inch screen is brilliant and dominates the front panel. At the top of the screen -- apart form the usual video-call camera and earpiece -- lie a touch sensitive media key, ambient light sensor and proximity sensor (the one that turns off the screen while taking a call).

The media key gives access to the music player, Web, camera, etc. Below the screen are the calling keys with the menu key in the centre (all in one row). The screen is recessed into the front panel. The right panel sports a volume rocker, a sliding screen lock button and the shutter release key.

On the left is the MicroSD card and SIM card slot. While the SIM gets installed easily, removing it is an exercise -- one needs to put the stylus into a small hole in the SIM slot to push it out!

The back panel has a 3.2-megapixel camera with a dual LED flash at the top and the stylus slot at the bottom. A coloured rim (Red or Blue) runs around the phone’s body. Overall, the device has great looks and will be well-received by the masses.

Touch features
The touch response of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is pretty impressive and users can operate it with either the stylus (which could have been made of better material) or a finger. It also come with a strum type stylus if you are bored with the conventional stylus

The device comes with a number of input options, including handwriting recognition, which again is quite accurate. It also offers a mini QWERTY keypad and a full QWERTY one. The latter is only available in landscape mode.

The most convenient feature of the 5800 is the phonebook. Unlike other devices where scrolling and searching is quite a task, the 5800 has an alphabetical keyboard for assistance.

The e-mail client supports multiple accounts and all popular e-mail services work on the phone. Set-up is simple and users can also schedule sending e-mails. On the downside, the phone comes only with a document viewer.

Connectivity option includes Wi-Fi, which is very convenient to set up. It also comes with an in-built GPS receiver and Nokia Maps for navigation. Three month’s navigation licence is free and the phone comes pre-loaded with maps of nine Indian cities.

Musical Maestro
Since the phone belongs to the XpressMusic series it has an amazing sound quality both in the headset and loudspeaker modes. However, the user interface of the player remains the same apart from some changes in the appearance and the touch optimisation.

Music can be sorted on the basis of artists, albums, composers and genres. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also has the option of creating playlists and displaying album art. It has five graphic equalisers and users can create more.

The FM radio of the phone is also good with a simple user interface and interesting appearance. We were happy with the reception as well as the music quality of the device. It comes with an automatic scanning feature, which switches to an alternative frequency automatically (especially handy while travelling). The FM radio also has RDS support.

Camera Cues

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera. The picture quality is a little disappointing. The highest picture resolution is 2048X1536 pixels. Though the device comes with a dual LED flash, the quality of pictures taken in low light conditions is not very good. The camera has numerous features like colour effects, sharpness and contrast. However, the phone doesn’t support geo-tagging.
On the other hand video recording is better as it shoots VGA quality at 30 frames per second. Other features include night mode, colour effects and exposure settings.

Freebies
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic comes with a lot of free accessories apart form the usual headset and charger. The sales pack contains an 8 GB memory card, a USB cable, TV out cable, a stand, smart pouch and much more. In terms of applications Facebook and MySpace come pre-loaded on the phone. Apart from that there are pre-loaded songs from A.R. Rehman’s new album along with 100 English and Hindi songs

The battery backup of the phone is quite impressive. A single charge lasts more than a day with three hours of making and receiving calls and a couple of hours of playing music and constant e-mailing.

Alternatively
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic costs Rs 19,200. Other options include Samsung F480 with a 5.0-megapixel camera for Rs 18,500.
